Empty Architectures
Photographic work on some abandoned buildings and constructions throughout the territory of the island of Mallorca, made by the architect and architectural photographer Lluís Bort. These constructions, on many occasions, were erected to fulfill a very specific function and over the years they became obsolete and forgotten. However, this does not mean that they are no longer useful, but that they should have the opportunity to be rehabilitated to enjoy a second life, providing them with a new use for their neighbors and their environment.
Returning to the photographic work, it collects different types of construction, from a hospital that they abandoned when they built a new one on the outskirts of the city; a Majorcan textile factory that was one of the economic engines of the island during the Civil War when Franco's troops bombed the industrial center of Barcelona; to the largest wine cellar on the island that closed in the 90s after 4 extensions.
In the project, each building is presented as an architectural gem against an intense blue and gradient sky that allows the beauty of each of them to be reflected. It seeks to highlight these constructions which were very important for the history of Mallorca, and which are often located in privileged locations, where they would have many guarantees of success if they were converted into new facilities for the cities.
This photographic project began in 2019 and it should be noted that since then adaptation work has begun on some of the buildings photographed, which we hope will allow the building to be recovered and enrich the city with new cultural offerings. With all this, this work wants to show the opportunity to rehabilitate these strategic and abandoned architectures in the Mallorcan territory for new uses such as museums, exhibition halls or neighborhood houses, among others.
Lluís Bort is an architect and architectural photographer and his life has always been linked to the world of photography. He started as part of the photography group L'art de la llum de Onda (Castelló). In it he held his first photographic contests, exhibitions and won several prizes over the years. Currently, he is also involved in teaching courses in Architecture and Landscape Photography at the College of Architects of the Balearic Islands.

Arquitecturas vacías
Trabajo fotográfico sobre algunos edificios y construcciones abandonados a lo largo del territorio de la isla de Mallorca, realizadas por el arquitecto y fotógrafo de arquitectura Lluís Bort. Estas construcciones, en muchas ocasiones, se erigieron para cumplir una función muy concreta y con el paso de los años quedaron obsoletas y olvidadas. Sin embargo, esto no quiere decir que ya no sirvan, sino que deberían tener la oportunidad de ser rehabilitadas para disfrutar de una segunda vida, dotándolas con un nuevo uso para sus vecinos y su entorno.
Volviendo a la obra fotográfica, ésta recoge diferentes tipologías constructivas, desde un hospital que abandonaron al construir uno nuevo a las afueras de la ciudad; una fábrica textil mallorquina que fue uno de los motores económicos de la isla durante la Guerra Civil cuando las tropas franquistas bombardearon el núcleo industrial de Barcelona; hasta la bodega de vino más grande de la isla que en los años 90 cerró tras 4 ampliaciones.
En el proyecto se presenta cada edificio como una joya arquitectónica sobre un cielo azul intenso y degradado que permite reflejar la belleza de cada uno de ellos. Busca poner en valor estas construcciones que fueron muy importantes para la historia de Mallorca. Y que en muchas ocasiones se ubican en localizaciones privilegiadas, donde tendrían muchas garantías de éxito si se convirtieran en nuevos equipamientos para las ciudades.
Este proyecto fotográfico comenzó en 2019 y cabe señalar que desde entonces en alguna de las construcciones fotografiadas se han iniciado trabajos de adecuación, que esperemos que permitan recuperar el edificio y enriquecer la ciudad con nuevas ofertas culturales. Con todo ello, este trabajo quiere mostrar la oportunidad de rehabilitación de estas arquitecturas estratégicas y abandonadas del territorio mallorquín para nuevos usos como museos, salas de exposiciones o casales de barrio, entre otros.
Lluís Bort es arquitecto y fotógrafo de arquitectura y su vida siempre ha sido ligada en el mundo de la fotografía. Empezó formando parte de la agrupación de fotografía El arte de la luz de Onda (Castelló). En ella realizó sus primeros concursos fotográficos, exposiciones y obtuvo varios premios a lo largo de los años. Actualmente, también está vinculado a la docencia impartiendo cursos de Fotografía de Arquitectura y Paisaje en el Colegio de Arquitectos de las Islas Baleares.

Arquitectures buides
Tornant a l’obra fotogràfica, aquesta recull diferents tipologies constructives, des d’un hospital que van abandonar en construir un nou als afores de la ciutat; una fàbrica tèxtil mallorquina que va ser un dels motors econòmics de l’illa durant la Guerra Civil quan les tropes franquistes van bombardejar el nucli industrial de Barcelona; fins al celler de vi més gran de l’illa que en els anys 90 va tancar després de 4 ampliacions.
En el projecte es presenta cada edifici com una joia arquitectònica sobre un cel blau intens i degradat que permet reflectir la bellesa de cadascun d’ells. Cerca posar en valor aquestes construccions que van ser molt importants per a la història de Mallorca, i que en moltes ocasions es situen en localitzacions privilegiades, on tindrien moltes garanties d’èxit si es convertissin en nous equipaments per a les ciutats.
Aquest projecte fotogràfic va començar en 2019 i cal assenyalar que des de llavors en alguna de les construccions fotografiades s’han iniciat treballs d’adequació, que esperem que permetin recuperar l’edifici i enriquir la ciutat amb noves ofertes culturals. Amb tot això, aquest treball vol mostrar l’oportunitat de rehabilitació d’aquestes arquitectures estratègiques i abandonades del territori mallorquí per a nous usos com a museus, sales d’exposicions o casals de barri, entre altres.

Harquitectes, the nature of the buildings
Vernacular architecture, in different cultures and in different climatic conditions, has always incorporated, sometimes very explicitly, architectural strategies to manage and organize fluid matter creating very specific atmospheres (in its broadest sense).
HARQUITECTES is a studio founded in 2000 by David Lorente, Josep Ricart, Xavier Ros and Roger Tudó. They combine their professional activity giving classes at ETSAV-UPC, ETSAB-UPC, ETH Zurich and Harvard GSD.
They have also been invited at the Porto Academy, AA School of architecture, Austin School of Architecture, Universidad Católica de Chile, ENSA Paris, Umea school of architecture, among other places.
His work has deserved national and international recognition and has been exhibited and published everywhere.
